With a fresh 7” at summit this morning it’s a welcomed sight for us powder hounds. The excitement and energy on the shuttle from the Meadows Lot was quite high as guests and employees anticipated an exciting day of powder skiing and riding. With this excitement we need to maintain awareness that we still have thin coverage on many of our slopes, especially our off-piste(unprepared runs).
It feels like mid-season yet we are still seeing early season conditions on the slopes. This being said we urge everyone to ski and ride with an extra level of caution. Even when we get new accumulation we still need to remember we don’t have the base we typically do this time of year, especially on some of our more Southern exposed runs in the Sunshine Bowl area.
One rule I learned about my first winter in Steamboat was the 50” rule that many locals follow. An extra level of caution or complete avoidance is used when considering off-piste terrain until we reach a 50” mid mountain base. When in doubt of snow conditions, whether in bounds or out, always error on the side of caution. J
