The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast, Tuesday, December 19, 2017

Joel Gratz

If you enjoy skiing in the sunshine, head out on Tuesday and Wednesday as you'll find mostly clear skies and comfortable temperatures starting in the teens and warming into the low 30s during the early afternoon.

Our next chance for snow will start on Wednesday evening and continue through early Thursday evening. This storm is moderately strong, though the wind direction will not blow from the west-northwest for most of the storm, and that means that our snow totals will likely stay in the 2-5 inch range (a wind from the west-northwest is most favorable for snowfall at Steamboat). There might be a bit more snow if we get lucky and few stronger cells happen to track over Steamboat.

Also, there is a chance that we'll get a few more fluffy inches of snow on Thursday night into Friday morning as this is when the wind direction will be more favorable.

Bottomline: ski Thursday-day and/or Friday morning for fresh powder.

We should see a brief break in the snow on Friday-day, then a second storm will bring flakes from Friday evening through Saturday evening. I expect an additional 2-4 inches from this system and plan to ski Saturday for another chance to make turns in the fresh snow.

Then we'll see frigid air from Saturday night through Monday morning with low temperatures of -10 to -20F and highs on Sunday near 0F. Thankfully, temperatures will warm back into the teens and 20s on Monday and beyond, and we should have another chance or two for snow through the end of December.

Thanks for reading and check back Wednesday for an update!
