Sunday was a sunny and warm day with high temperatures ranging from 35-45F from the summit to the base.
Now on Monday morning, a weak storm to the north has pushed lower clouds into Colorado’s northern mountains, and these clouds should hang around for most of the day. Expect a partly to mostly cloudy sky with a few snow showers and temperatures rising into the upper 20s to low 30s. There is a chance for a little bit of snow accumulation (0-2 inches) from this system, but it likely won’t be anything to write home about.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, we should see sunnier weather with warm temperatures, topping out in the low 40s.
Then we should have a chance for snow on Wednesday night and Thursday as a piece of energy from a storm over the west coast heads east and moves over Colorado. The temperature during this first wave will be warm, and while most of the mountains will likely be cold enough to see snow, the base and lower-elevation valleys nearby could see raindrops. The setup for this initial wave is not great for Steamboat, with a wind direction from the southwest, so I am keeping the snow forecast low.
Following this first wave, we should see dry weather from later Thursday through early on Saturday.
Then a second wave of energy should bring colder air and more intense snowfall between sometime Saturday night and Monday morning. I am more excited about the snow potential during this time as we’ll see colder air and a wind direction eventually switching to blow from the west or west-northwest, which is more favorable for Steamboat. The best chance for skiing cold powder will likely be on Sunday or Monday (March 18-19).
