We have a dusting on the snow stake cam as of 7:45 am as the storm has made its way into Steamboat. Temperatures are currently in the low 30s and we have a wet snow falling on the mountain, with a rain/snow mix at the base area.
A relatively weak cold front will swing through Steamboat later this morning and bring us a good shot of moderate to heavy snow. Our primary wind direction will shift to blow from the southwest to the west-southwest by midday. This isn't ideal for us but the more west it turns, the better.
In total, look for 3-6 inches through Friday evening, with soft and surfy turns on Friday afternoon and again on Saturday morning.
Dry conditions and sunny skies prevail for the weekend. Daytime highs will rise into the upper 30s to low 40s on the mountain so dress light and lather on plenty of sunscreen.
Our next chance for snow will then arrive on Sunday night and into Monday as a slow-moving system drops to the west and southwest of Colorado. This type of setup does NOT favor Steamboat but we should still be looking at light showers through Tuesday. There is also a slight chance for another quick-moving system around next Wednesday and Thursday but confidence is very low at this point.
Looking further ahead, dry weather takes control by late next week and into the first week of April. The longer-range models are trying to introduce something after the first week of April but as we all know, this is fantasy land when looking at snow forecasts.
Thanks for reading and stay tuned!
