The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast, Saturday, November 25, 2017

The Steamboat Daily Snow-Joel Gratz

The upper mountains received a quick dusting of snow from a passing shower on Friday afternoon.

Now, Saturday will be a mostly sunny day with high temperatures in the upper 30s to low 40s. Sunday and Monday will be similar to Saturday but with warmer temperatures topping out in the upper 40s at mid-mountain. Snow conditions should be soft during the middle of the day and afternoon due to the warmer temperatures.

Looking ahead to next…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast, Friday, November 24, 2017

The Steamboat Daily Snow-Joel Gratz

Thanksgiving was mostly sunny at Steamboat, and now on Friday morning, more clouds are covering the sky. These clouds are being produced by a weak storm that will brush by northern Colorado on Friday afternoon. Expect the clouds to hang around through most of the day, and we may even see snow showers later on Friday, which could produce a coating of new snow.

The main benefit of Friday afternoon's not-very-strong storm will be cooler…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast, Thursday, November 23, 2017

The Steamboat Daily Snow - Joel Gratz

It's Thanksgiving Day and the mountain is now open. Enjoy your first turns of the season!

The current weather pattern is pushing most of the moisture and storms to the north of Colorado, however, some of this moisture is sneaking south, hanging over northern Colorado, and that is why there is a persistent layer of clouds over Steamboat. I do think we'll see more sunshine on Thursday compared to Wednesday, though, so keep that sunblock…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast, Wednesday, November 22, 2017

The Steamboat Daily Snow - Joel Gratz

Steamboat received 3 inches of snow late Monday night through mid-morning on Tuesday, and this is just in time for Scholarship Day on Wednesday. I hope that you enjoy the first turns of the season!

The weather for the rest of this week and weekend will be partly sunny and dry as a large area of high pressure deflects most storms well to our north. Temperatures at night should be cold enough for some snowmaking, but we will likely not see…

Mountain Operations update

Hello Team Steamboat,

What a week it has been!  I have to admit that about a week ago today I was looking at the forecast and wasn’t sure we would be able to get open on time.   I met with the Snowmaking and Slopes teams and we started talking about what we could do that was in our control to influence our ability to be open for Scholarship day.   I have to say, that our Snowmaking Manager, Corey Peterson was not flinching….one bit.  He was confident that with a small window…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast, Friday, November 17, 2017

The Steamboat Daily Snow - Joel Gratz

Snow started late on Monday night and it's still snowing lightly now on Tuesday morning. My best estimate for snow totals is about 2-3 inches on the mid and upper mountain, and perhaps another coating to 2 inches could accumulate early on Tuesday morning. Every snowflake helps and it's great to see this accumulation even as the current weather pattern is not conducive to a lot of snow.

The mountain will open on Wednesday (see note above),…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast, Friday, November 17, 2017

The Steamboat Daily Snow - Joel Gratz

Temperatures continue to drop nicely below freezing at night, so snow making is continuing. Hopefully, there will be enough cold weather to allow for enough snow making so that Steamboat can start spinning the lifts on Wednesday.

In terms of natural snow, we should see a weak storm on Monday night through Tuesday. This system has plenty of moisture but also is rather warm, with temperatures forecast to be the 20s and low 30s. The…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast, Friday, November 17, 2017

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast - Joel Gratz

Snow will be in the air all day on Friday and through Friday evening.

The first part of the storm between Friday morning and Friday early afternoon will bring warm temperatures and a wind from the west-southwest, and neither is ideal for Steamboat. We will likely see some snow accumulate on the upper mountain, with raindrops possible on the lower mountain.

The second part of the storm will be much more beneficial. Around 2-3…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast, Thursday, November 16, 2017

Winter Storm Warning in effect from November 16, 11:00 PM MST until November 18, 05:00 AM MST

The last few days have been warm and dry, but that will change as the next storm will begin on Thursday night.

From Thursday night through Friday midday, we'll see a few inches of snow on the mountain and perhaps some raindrops at the base. Then between about 1-3pm on Friday, a cold front will blast through Steamboat with rapidly falling temperatures and very intense snow. Snowfall…
