I was just going over the weather maps and it looks like a little snow will be moving in to the Steamboat area over the next couple of days. Look for some snow shower activity to move in tomorrow afternoon and Thursday with a cold front and better shot of snow late Friday and Saturday morning. We’re at the point where a few inches of snow will really help things out and, at least in the short term, this will be very welcome.
The snow showery activity will give way to a few…Continue

It was great to see 7” of new snow but hardly nice to see it blow around as it did early this morning. We recorded winds of 111 miles per hour on Tower 17 around 7:15 this morning. Thanks to a very good weather forecast we were able to strategize our placement of personnel and lift openings to be ready when the winds subsided and salvaged what turned out to be a great afternoon of skiing and riding. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this happen. It was a scramble.

We had a very successful opining of lots of new terrain in Sunshine Bowl today. I know this is earlier than previously advertised but opening it mid-day gave us a chance to get everything dialed without all the hurrying to open for the masses early in the morning. I think it provided our guest with an unexpected surprise. I want to thank the Patrol, Lift Operations and, as always, our snowmaking and grooming experts for the extraordinary effort. Our remote snowmaking paid off providing…Continue

Not much change in the weather picture which is dominated by a dome of high pressure located on the Oregon cost and a closed low over northern Baja sending the weather way north and way south. (darn). We could see some storm energy make it through here Monday evening and then again on Wednesday providing some cloudiness and light snow but don’t look for much. As we saw last week even these little snow showers help to freshen up the surface and add a little moisture to the snow. We’ll…Continue

As predicted, 3” of new snow for today freshening the surface and adding a little moisture to the snow. A very welcome improvement. We are still experiencing a split flow off the Pacific driving storm energy way north and way south of Steamboat. Looking at this morning’s models, we can see the flow beginning to unify mid next week and the model shows a storm hitting northwest Colorado next Wednesday into Thursday, then, by the time we roll onto the week after Christmas, it looks like we…Continue

So what’s all this La Nina hype you ask? If you attended one of the Winter Welcome sessions you heard me talk about the La Nina weather phenomena that focuses the storm energy from the Pacific Ocean into northwester Colorado. So, where is it? Why isn’t it snowing?
One thing that is typical…Continue
