Mountain News for Friday, November 30, 2012 from Doug Allen

I was just going over the archive of late arriving winters here in Steamboat over the past 27 winters I’ve been here and can’t help but recall playing golf at the Haymaker on December 7th 1999, a day that will live in infamy (for other reasons).  We were seeing a late winter arrival not unlike the one we are experiencing right now.  We opened the ski area as scheduled on November 24th with the old Southface and Headwall lifts in operation serving manmade snow on…

Routt County rancher Vernon Summer embraced changes that skiing brought to the Yampa Valley

Tom Ross – The Steamboat Today

Vernon Summer, who personified the historic bridge between the ranching and skiing communities in Routt County, died peacefully in his easy chair at the Doak Walker Care Center on Tuesday night. He was two weeks shy of his 95th birthday.

Summer, who spent his life on the family ranch in the South Valley in an area known as Sidney, could ride a pair of Alpine skis as well as he sat a horse. And he was a heckuva horseman.

Always open to change,… Continue

Uphill Access Information from John Kohnke, Patrol Director

A few updates for a winter that seems to be having a hard time starting.  With only Vogue and Heavenly Daze open, we have been having to restrict uphill access to evenings only.  We have been bringing the groomers in at 4:00 a.m. and they have been finishing up at approximately 8:00 a.m.   Several days a week, we have also been using the winch cat.   We are going to ask that folks refrain from accessing the hill during those morning hours as well as during operating hours.   There is simply…

I’m feelin’ lucky and quite honored to take the first ride in the Golden Gondola Cabin this morning with Loris Werner, Deb Werner, Hans Geier, David Crisler, Chris Diamond, Rob Perlman and, of course, our own Billy Kidd.  Now that we’ve got the gondola up and running it feels like opening day, Steamboat’s 50th opening day, wow.  I can’t help but feel like one of the new guys in this group, this being only my 27th winter here in Steamboat, when you compare to Loris who…

Steamboat Ski Area adopts new uphill ski policy

Five years ago, using skins or snowshoes to hike up Mount Werner before or after the Steamboat Ski Area had opened for the day or season was one of those quaint stories effective at showing just how crazy and tough some mountain people were.

And it was not an area of great concern for ski area officials.

And while "skinning up" might still be a fine example of Routt County resolve, it’s a growing concern for the ski…
