Joe Nicholls and CAIC Forecast for Friday, April 20, 2018

Joe Nicholls

Definitely an increase in moisture over the area with numerous showers on the radar. There's a little lightning over northern New Mexico and some of eastern Utah. The data shows a marginally unstable air mass, so a slight chance of a thunderstorm today, but with the lack of heating, these look fairly isolated. The air mass cools off tonight with the snow level dropping to the base, and into early tomorrow morning. Another system will clip the area on Monday.

Joe Nicholls/NOAA Forecast for Wednesday, April 18, 2018

Joe Nicholls

It's a chilly morning, but it should be a nice weather day and much calmer than the last couple of days. The next system will move into California today and move inland tonight and tomorrow. Clouds with showers and a couple of thunderstorms possible on Friday with the overnight models showing closer to a half an inch liquid with snow levels starting at 9,000, but lowering to 8,000 feet. A couple of showers will linger into Saturday, then another system on…

Joe Nicholls/NOAA Forecast for Tuesday, April 17, 2018

Joe Nicholls

The cold front is just to the west of Craig at 7 am, and will move slowly eastward reaching us around noon or in the early afternoon. I saw the winds increased thru the afternoon yesterday and the gradients are tighter today, so windy and turning cooler with showers and a chance of a thunderstorm, then some snow! The next system moving into the West will bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Friday, decreasing on Saturday with a nice weather day on…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Monday, April 16, 2018

Joel Gratz

Thanks for reading the Steamboat Daily Snow during the 2017-2018 season!

Here is how the snow fell by month, compared to average:

November: -11%

December: -33%

January: -30%

February: +1%

March: +27%

In other words, it was an incredibly slow start, then the atmosphere gave us more hope later in the season, and we ended on a high note.

Even with well below-average snowfall for the season, the mountain was open, we…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Sunday, April 15, 2018

Joel Gratz-

Surprise!

If you get out on the hill early on Sunday morning, you’ll find a dusting of new snow that fell on Saturday night.

Earlier forecasts showed the chance for a few snow showers on Saturday night, and the storm actually came in a bit stronger than expected.

Sunday morning’s snow showers and clouds should move away by mid-morning, leaving partly sunny skies for the rest of Sunday with temperatures rising into the mid-to-upper 30s. Have fun…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Saturday, April 14, 2018

Joel Gratz-

Friday was a chilly day with 2-3 inches falling during the morning, which created fun powder conditions (total snowfall of about 10 inches when factoring in Thursday night) on the upper half of the mountain!

Then on Friday night, two inches of snow fell at the summit snow stake, and now on Saturday morning, light snow is just tapering off. If you’re heading out on Saturday, you’ll find a morning temperature of 10-20F with soft-ish snow from the previous 36 hours of…

Steamboat Mountain Happenings for Friday, April 13, 2018

Joel Gratz

On Thursday evening, a cold front arrived and snow began to fall, and now on Friday morning, the official mid-mountain report and the summit snow stake camera both show 7 inches of new snow.

We are seeing a lull in the storm now early on Friday morning with a chilly temperature of 8F at the summit to 23F at the base. Snow showers should return by mid-to-late morning and continue through Friday night. Additional snowfall could range from 4-8 inches from Friday…

Steamboat Mountain Happenings for Thursday, April 12, 2018

Joel Gratz

Thursday morning is remarkably warm with temperatures that never hit freezing on Wednesday night. Readings will be in the 40s for most of the day along with very strong winds, gusting to 30-50 mph during the middle of the day and the afternoon.

On Thursday afternoon, we could see a few showers, and then on Thursday night, a cold front will move through, bringing snow and dropping temperatures to the 20s and eventually to the teens. My snow forecast for Thursday night…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Wednesday, April 11, 2018

Joel Gratz

Wednesday morning is warm, with temperatures near freezing at the summit and already in the 40s on the rest of the mountain. We’ll see clouds this morning, then from late morning through afternoon, skies should be mostly sunny with temperatures warming into the upper 40s and low 50s.

Thursday will start out dry and warm, then the next storm will push a few showers into the area by the afternoon.

On Thursday night, a cold front will move through, and…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Tuesday, April 10, 2018

Joel Gratz

We will trade powder days for dry days this week as Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will be dry and warm with highs in the 40s near and above mid-mountain. High-and-mid-level clouds could filter the sunshine at times, which could slow the softening process of the snow, but with warm temperatures, the snow will eventually soften and you'll enjoy classic spring skiing. The only weather issues will be a few showers on Wednesday, and gusty winds on Thursday.

Then our…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Monday, April 9, 2018

Joel Gratz

Sunday was a fun powder day at the upper elevations of Steamboat with snow showers and breaks of sunshine throughout the day.

Then on Sunday night, the final wave of colder snow moved through with 7 inches falling at the summit and about 5 inches on the official mid-mountain snow stake. We could see a few more hours of accumulating snowfall until about 9:00 am on Monday morning, so with a little luck, you'll find a bit more snow than the report indicates. Have fun on…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Sunday, April 8, 2018

Joel Gratz-

As of Sunday at 4:00am, the summit snow stake shows that about 8 inches of snow accumulated on Saturday night, and on the upper half of the mountain, we might see an additional 1-3 inches before the snow stops early this morning. While temperatures are finally starting to cool, the freezing level was between the summit and mid-mountain, so like Saturday, expect thick, dense powder on the upper part of the mountain with little to no new snow on the lower half of the mountain.…
