Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecasts for Friday, March 31, 2017

Joe Nicholls

Okay to say I'm not a fan of these types of systems would be an understatement! The low pressure is over the northwest corner of Arizona and will be moving toward the east today. The pressure difference from the northeast is at 6.1 mb, and is forecasted to increase to 7 mb this afternoon, then dropping off this evening. The winds at Storm Peak are less than 10 mph at 7 AM, but are forecasted to increase to near 20 mph this afternoon. All in all, fairly breezy for…

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecasts for Thursday, March 30, 2017

Joe Nicholls

The system moving into the interior of the West this morning is going to be a pain, I can tell already. Most of the energy heads a little south of us, and we see more of an easterly flow. So, I'll keep the precipitation as showers, amounts light and the gradients late tonight and tomorrow are still in the 6 or 7 mb range, and the east winds at 700 mb around 20 mph, so in the windiest spots with the east exposure, gusts to 50 mph possible tomorrow.

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecasts for Wednesday, March 29, 2017

Joe Nicholls

Shaping up to be a fairly nice weather day on the mountain! The next system is off the Pacific Norethwest Coast, and should take a path toward central Utah and near Grand Junction. These are not my "favorite" type of systems, as they support more of an easterly pressure gradient and definitely not favorable for precipitation. There's a chance of a thunderstorm tomorrow afternoon and again Friday morning and afternoon. The easterly pressure gradient is near 6 or 7 mb…

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecasts for Tuesday, March 28, 2017

Joe Nicholls

I've spent as much time on the forecast today, as any all season. The satellite images show a fairly disorganized system with some development further south in New Mexico, so that bugged me a little. Then, when you look at the surface pressure change maps, and all of the falls are over New Mexico. This tells me a lot of the support for this system is further south. I still feel like we'll see some showers, but the more…

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecasts for Monday, March 27, 2017

Joe Nicholls

We have a fairly nice day on the mountain, but the next system is coming across western and central Nevada this morning and will continue eastward with some showers ahead of it this afternoon, then should see a cooler air mass overnight with snow showers down to the base. A surface low pressure deepens over southeastern Colorado tomorrow and while I see a period of snow tomorrow, and tomorrow night. Now, I could bust on this, as there's a chance for the winds to go more…

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecasts for Sunday, March 26, 2017

Ladies and Gents,

Joe Nicholls-We're on the backside of the low pressure with a lot of clouds this morning and could be lingering snow showers, but then some breaks this afternoon and tonight. The next system is along the West Coast and will bring an increase in cloud cover tomorrow with showers likely in the afternoon and evening, then the air mass slowly cools later tomorrow night and Tuesday. The air mass is unstable enough on Tuesday for a risk of a thundershower. The next system…

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecasts for Saturday, March 25, 2017

Joe Nicholls-

A nice start to the day, but the next system is over Utah and will be shifting eastward through the day. The lifted index drops to between 0 and -1, so there's a slight chance of a thunderstorm this afternoon. The air mass cools tonight with the snow level making it to the base after midnight. We'll see conditions improve through tomorrow, then wait for the next system moving into the area Monday afternoon and night. I wish the air masses were a little cooler with these…

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecasts for Friday, March 24, 2017

Joe Nicholls

The front behaved, EXCEPT we saw very little precipitation and like no snow. Clouds will be with us this morning, but decrease this afternoon and evening. The next system moves in later tomorrow and into early Sunday, and another system later Monday and Tuesday. All of these systems are somewhat marginal on snow level for the base, but should add a little to the upper portions.

NOAA-Storm Peak Observatory

Today - Isolated snow showers before 10 am. Partly…

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecasts for Thursday, March 23, 2017

Joe Nicholls

Low pressure is over Utah this morning and is progressing slowly eastward, and we'll see an increase in the clouds and showers, possibly a thunderstorm. The lifted index this afternoon is 0 to -1, so definitely need to keep a look out. The cold front reaches us really late this afternoon or early evening bringing the snow level down to the base. A couple of snow showers possible tomorrow morning, but overall, an improving weather day, especially in the afternoon. Another…
