Joe Nicholls and Safety Wise Forecast for Friday, February 28, 2014

Joe Nicholls: As the system moved into Utah, we saw a little rain, but then snow levels lowered and we saw 2 to 3 inches around the 7000 foot level and we'll end up with 6 or 7 up top. So, I'm going to follow that pretty close for us overnight. An extremely difficult forecast with clouds increasing through the day with rain and snow moving into the area this afternoon and evening. The snow level is likely to be near or just above the base level, and the air mass will be unstable enough for a…

Joe Nicholls and Safety Wise Forecast for Thursday, February 27, 2014

Joe Nicholls: An extremely difficult forecast with clouds increasing through the day with rain and snow moving into the area this afternoon and evening. The snow level is likely to be near or just above the base level, and the air mass will be unstable enough for a slight chance of a thunderstorm later this afternoon and evening. We should see enough cooling of the air mass for a couple of inches of snow overnight. A break between systems tomorrow, but clouds and showers later tomorrow night…

Joe Nicholls and Safety Wise Forecast for Wednesday, February 26, 2014

Joe Nicholls: I didn't expect much from the system yesterday, but I expected a little! The next system is moving into California this morning and will move into our area later tomorrow and tomorrow night. Could see a little rain and snow mixed at the base late afternoon and evening, but change to snow overnight. An unsettled weekend with periods of snow, but the wind direction isn't the most favorable.

TODAY...PARTLY SUNNY. A 20 PERCENT CHANCE OF SNOW IN THE MORNING. HIGHS…

Joe Nicholls and Safety Wise Forecast for Tuesday, February 25, 2014

Joe Nicholls: An active period with a number of systems moving across the area. The first will be a combination of a cold front dropping southward through the Rockies and a weak upper level system from the Pacific Northwest. The cold front is mainly a shallow, east of the mountains , so I think amounts will be on the light side. A couple of rain and snow showers tomorrow afternoon, but again a light/ weak situation. A couple of stronger, more moist Pacific systems will move across the area…

Joe Nicholls and Safety Wise Forecast for Monday, February 24, 2014

Joe Nichllos: Another nice weather day on the mountain, but some clouds will come and go. A weak system will move across the area tomorrow bringing a period of snow, but should exit the area fairly quickly tomorrow night. A couple of additional systems between Thursday afternoon and the weekend that will bring more snow to freshen up the mountain!          TODAY...PARTLY SUNNY. HIGHS IN THE 30S. SOUTHEAST WINDS 10 TO 15 MPH SHIFTING TO THE WEST IN THE AFTERNOON.

TONIGHT...MOSTLY…

Joe Nicholls and Safety Wise Forecast for Sunday, February 23, 2014

Joe Nicholls: It's looking like the winds behaved last night, but I am a little perplexed that we didn't get a little more snow. Ugh. We'll have clouds early, but the main flow is lifting a little north, so we should see more and more breaks as we go through the day. The winds should behave, as the 700 mb speeds are less than 30 knots and the surface gradient is weaker than the last couple of days. So, breezy at times, but I'm sure you can handle it. Clouds move back into the area later…

Joe Nicholls and Safety Wise Forecast for Saturday, February 22, 2014

Joe Nicholls: Nice to see the winds behave like we talked about for last evening! We have a moist northwest flow aloft today and tonight, so we should see a nice period of snowfall. Once again the winds will be gradually increasing through the afternoon, and peaking right around 5 PM, then the gradient and winds aloft back off early evening. Very similar to yesterday, but the surface pressure gradient is a little weaker today! After some morning clouds and snow showers early tomorrow, it…

Joe Nicholls and Safety Wise Forecast for Friday, February 21. 2014

Joe Nicholls: We'll see variable clouds and a couple of periods of snow or snow showers, especially this morning and again tomorrow afternoon and evening. The winds look like they behaved last night, but we'll have to deal the wind today again. The surface gradient will be gradually increasing later this morning and into the afternoon, plus the 700 mb winds stay around 30 knots from the west. I do see a decrease in the surface gradient this evening and the winds drop to 25 knots at 11 PM, so…

Joe Nicholls and Safety Wise Forecast for Thursday, February 20, 2014

Joe Nicholls: That was quite the cold front that moved across the area, and now we'll see a couple of weak systems move across the area today through Saturday bringing periods of light snow or snow showers. It'll also be breezy at times with below normal temperatures. A drier air mass will be over us on Sunday and Monday with another system bringing a chance of snow or snow showers on Tuesday.

Luke Graham - The Steamboa Today

Vic Wild barreled down the parallel giant slalom course at the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park, knifing through the gates while the slush of Russian snow kicked up.

Joe Nicholls and Safety Wise Forecast for Wednesday, February 19, 2014

Discussion on storm event The cold front is into the northwest corner of Utah and should reach us between 3 and 5 PM this afternoon. The air mass will be quite unstable as this cold front moves into the area, so there is a chance of a thunderstorm near the front. Should see a burst of snow through the evening and a much colder air mass will move in behind the front. Another system will move into the area later tomorrow night and Friday bringing another period of snow or snow showers. The…

Ted Cordova is one of the last of the drifting cowboys and a builder of ski trails

Tom Ross - The Steamboat Today

One of my favorite mid-morning powder runs at Steamboat is Ted’s Ridge, a north-facing upper intermediate trail that peels off to skier’s right of Heavenly Daze. Often, you can still find untracked snow on the far right and far left of the moderately steep first pitch at 10 a.m., then bounce through small powder bumps where the pitch begins to…
