The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Tuesday, January 30, 2018

Joel Gratz

On Tuesday, we saw partly sunny skies with a mid-mountain high temperature in the mid-20s.

Now on Wednesday morning, our temperature is warmer, still in the mid-20s, thanks to cloud cover and more wind than the previous nights. We’ll likely see mostly cloudy skies today on Wednesday, which will keep the temperature in the 20s to low 30s with flatter light conditions.

Then the weather will get interesting starting on Wednesday night and continue for about one…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Tuesday, January 30, 2018

Joel Gratz

Tuesday and Wednesday’s weather should be similar to Monday – partly cloudy skies and high temperatures rising into the low-to-mid 30s on the hill.

Then the weather will get interesting starting on Wednesday night and continuing for about one week. The storm track will position itself near or over northern Colorado (where Steamboat is located) and this will bring chances for snow nearly every day and night for about one week.

The best chance for more intense…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Monday, January 29, 2018

Joel Gratz

On Sunday, we had a mostly cloudy day thanks to weak energy and moisture that moved over Colorado’s northern mountains.

For the next three days, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, expect dry weather, partly-to-mostly sunny skies, and warmer temperatures with afternoon highs in the low 30s.

The next storm should bring snow on Wednesday night and Thursday (January 31 - February 1). Steamboat will likely be right on the edge between lighter snow accumulations (a…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Sunday, January 28, 2018

Joel Gratz-

Today on Sunday, weak energy and moisture will move over the northern mountains of Colorado (where Steamboat is located), and this will likely mean mostly cloudy skies with flurries. I was expecting more snow from this storm (perhaps a coating to a few inches), but we usually need cooling temperatures to get snow at Steamboat, and this storm is not bringing cooler temperatures, so now it appears that we’ll stay mostly dry. The high temperature on Sunday should be in the upper…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Saturday, January 27, 2018

Joel Gratz-

The official snow total from the storm on Thursday night and Friday morning was 8 inches, but the summit snow stake camera showed 15 inches, and it was absolute Champagne Powder as it was light, fluffy, and effortless to ski.

This is the Steamboat Surprise, where the forecast is for roughly 3-6 inches but you get 2-3x more than expected. It’s nearly impossible to forecast, because, while I’ve figured out a few conditions that need to be met for it to happen (wind from…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Friday, January 26, 2018

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Friday, January 26, 2018

Joel Gratz

It’s a magical morning in Steamboat on Friday!

The official snow report at 5:00 am says 5 inches at mid-mountain and the summit, but the summit snow-stake camera shows 9-10 inches as of 630 am, and the SNOTEL backcountry weather station on Buffalo Pass to the north of Steamboat shows about 10 inches with 0.3 inches of water content. That would be a snow-to-liquid ratio of 30-to-1, or…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Thursday, January 25, 2018

Joel Gratz

Thursday will be another dry and partly sunny day. Morning temperatures will be warmer on the mountain (the mid-20s) and colder at the base area (5F) and then by midday temperatures across the mountain will rise into the low 30s.

The upcoming storm should bring snow from near midnight Thursday through midday Friday. The snow on Thursday night will be steady and reasonably intense for a few hours, and then the snow will turn into more on-and-off showers on Friday…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Friday, January 24, 2018

Joel Gratz

A weak storm cruised over northern Colorado on Monday night and dropped about 3 inches at the mid-mountain snow stake, and the summit snow stake camera also shows 3 inches as of 5 am on Tuesday morning. This new accumulation will make the already soft snow even softer, so get out and enjoy the fresh flakes! Any lingering snow showers should end by Tuesday mid-morning with perhaps an additional 1-2 inches of accumulation.

Following a dry period on Tuesday afternoon,…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Monday, January 22, 2018

Joel Gratz

I hope that you enjoyed the powder on Sunday! Following the 3.5 to 5 inches that accumulated on Saturday night, another 3 inches fell on Sunday afternoon when the wind direction swung around to blow from the northwest (a more favorable direction than northeast) and an additional 3 inches fell on Sunday night as a final piece of the storm’s energy moved over Steamboat. This means that you’ll find more soft…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Sunday, January 21, 2018

Joel Gratz-

Snow began to fall on Saturday evening, and by Sunday morning at 5 am, Steamboat received 3.5 inches at mid-mountain and 5.0 inches at the summit.

Expect light snow to continue during the day on Sunday with an additional 1-3 inches of accumulation. As the storm strengthens over eastern Colorado, the wind will blow from the northeast over Steamboat, and this is not a favorable wind direction for significant additional snowfall at Steamboat, which is why I am keeping my…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Saturday, January 20, 2018

Joel Gratz-

The weather on Friday was sunnier than I expected with temperatures topping out around 40 degrees. I hope you enjoyed the warmth as we are about to head into a colder period for the next 7-10 days (cold weather is also something to enjoy!).

The weather should be dry on Friday night and most of Saturday. Even though the storm is approaching, winds will blow from the south, and this is not a favorable wind direction for snow at Steamboat.

On Saturday night, expect…

The Steamboat Daily Snow Forecast for Friday, January 19, 2018

Joel Gratz

Thursday’s high temperature at mid-mountain was around 30 degrees with partly cloudy skies. Friday should be even warmer with highs in the upper 30s. Expect similar or more clouds on Friday as the next storm approaches from the west.

The weather should be dry on Friday night and most of Saturday, then we will finally begin to see snowflakes starting Saturday late afternoon or evening, and the snow should continue through Sunday midday. It will NOT snow steadily…
