Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecast for Friday, August 18, 2017

Joe Nicholls

We're looking like we're in a fairly quiet weather pattern today and tomorrow with the models showing some showers down by I-70. We'll gradually see the moisture spread northward, but I don't see much more than scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms through early in the week.

No chance of thunderstorms today.

NOAA - Steamboat Springs

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecast for Thursday, August 17, 2017

Joe Nicholls

The dew points are dropping, and the atmosphere is trying to dry and stablize. Still a slight chance of a brief shower or thunderstorm today, but most of the activity will be south of the area. In fact, through early next week, just enough moisture and instability to mention an isolated thunderstorm, but I wouldn't really change any outdoor plans.

Given the discussion, Joe is calling for a low chance of thunderstorms from Noon to 6 pm.

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecast for Wednesday, August 16, 2017

Joe Nicholls

After a couple of active weather days, should be much quieter over the next couple of days. The satellite images show a system over Nevada that isn't handled well by the models, so I'm keeping a very slight chance in the forecast, but anything today or tomorrow is pretty isolated and likely not to stay around for very long.

Joe predicts a low chance of thunderstorms from 4 to 8 pm today.

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecast for Tuesday, August 15, 2017

Joe Nicholls

There's still some light showers over the region this morning and likely to see some development this afternoon. We begin to dry and stablize the air mass tomorrow with more isolated development, then Thursday and Friday are looking like awesome weather days! We'll see a return of enough moisture and instability over the weekend for some isolated afternoon thunderstorms.

Joe is calling for a low chance of thunderstorms from Noon to 8 pm.

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecast for Monday, August 14, 2017

Joe Nicholls

A fairly decent cold front front has moved into the northern Rockies and trails back across southern Idaho and into northern Nevada. This system will continue southeastward bringing an increase in clouds along with some showers and thunderstorms. The front will push down toward I-70 later tomorrow and Wednesday, and as long as it stays there, we should see a couple of nice weather days. The problem, is that there's a tendency for these washed out fronts to push back…

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecast for Friday, August 11, 2017

Joe Nicholls

I've had to adjust some timing and a little of the thought process with this forecast. The air mass is still fairly moist and unstable enough for a couple of showers and thunderstorms. There's a little activity this morning, then this should decrease a little later this morning and during the early afternoon, then come back later in the afternoon and evening. The bigger adjustment is for tomorrow afternoon and evening, and on Sunday, as the overnight models show better…

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecast for Thursday, August 10, 2017

Joe Nicholls

The moist westerly flow continues, and we'll see another fairly active weather day. The models continue to show a little drier and somewhat more stable air mass this weekend, but not sure I trust it. I do expect a decrease in the thunderstorm coverage, but I still believe we'll see a couple in the area each afternoon, and even an increase by early next week.

Joe says: A Low chance of thunderstorms from Noon to 4 pm, followed by a Moderate chance from then to 8 pm…

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecast for Wednesday, August 9, 2017

Joe Nicholls

There's some impressive rainfall totals from across the area yesterday, so it was good to hit the forecast hard. The data this morning continues to keep a really unstable air mass over us today and tomorrow, so I kept it very busy in the weather department! We do dry the air mass some Friday, and drier with a more stable air mass over the weekend. This should limit the development to just isolated activity.

Joe's prediction for today is a Low chance from Noon to 4…

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecast for Tuesday, August 8, 2017

Joe Nicholls

A weak upper level low pressure is over the Great Basin this morning and will be moving slowly eastward today and tomorrow. The air mass over us is moist, and becomes fairly unstable later this morning thru early evening, and again looking really unstable tomorrow afternoon with the lifted index coming in at -4! We'll begin the drying out process to the air mass Thursday through the weekend, but still a chance of a couple of thunderstorms each afternoon.

Joe is of…

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecast for, Monday, August 7, 2017

Joe Nicholls

The moisture is pooling over the region, so a lot of clouds over the next couple of days with an increase in showers and thunderstorms. I expect some areas of heavier rainfall, especially near the thunderstorms. A gradual decrease in the activity at the end of the week and next weekend, but still a chance each afternoon or early evening.

Joe is calling for a low chance of thunderstorms from Noon to 4 pm, a moderate chance from 4 pm to 8 pm, and a low chance from…

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecast for, Thursday, August 3, 2017

Joe Nicholls

A fair amount of cloudiness over the area this morning, and I expect we'll see an increase in activity fairly early today with the lifted index to -3 prior to noon. The air mass isn't super saturated, so rainfall amounts, if any, will be light. We should see minimal activity tomorrow and Saturday, but I'm going to move the timing up on the convective activity to Sunday and that increase will last into the coming week. The high pressure is shifting away from the area with…

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecast for, Wednesday, August 2, 2017

Joe Nicholls

We’ll see a weak front settle into the area later today through midday on Thursday, and should be just strong enough to generate a couple of showers and possibly a thunderstorm. A little drier air mass Friday and Saturday, so anything that develops will be isolated. I do see more of an increase in moisture and a chance of thunderstorms increasing early next week.

Joe is calling for a low chance of thunderstorms from 4 pm to Midnight.

Joe Nicholls and NOAA Forecast for Colorado Day, Tuesday, August 1, 2017

Joe Nicholls

The high pressure is moving a little further northwest of the area with a fairly weak front moving across us tomorrow and Thursday bringing a slight increase in a chance of a thunderstorm. I think today will be similar to yesterday, when we developed a couple of cells, but they decreased fairly rapidly. The moisture will increase later Sunday into early next week, bringing another increase in the chance of thunderstorms.

Joe is calling for a low chance of…
